Battleground: Misery

Battleground: Misery

The Targets of Demonic Attack

In our study of  Spiritual Warfare we have discovered the devil and his gang will attack Believers along three principle avenues: Lust of the Flesh, Lust of the Eyes and the Boastful Pride of Life.  (Please punch this link to review that lesson … )  Last week I proposed that once evil is engaged with the Believer via one of these pathways, the target of attack are the Fruit of the Spirit identified in Galatians 5:22-23.  The Fruit of the Spirit are those behaviors and endeavors giving evidence of the Presence and Persuasion of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Believer – they are the very fingerprint of God.  It follows then that they represent the prime battlegrounds in the fight to discredit and mar our identification with Christ and the Jesus Path.  Demons assault our abilities to bear the Fruit.

Last message we zeroed in on the Fruit of Love.  We examined the “photo-negative” to look for evidences of the opposite of Love – those traces of behavior and intention – the “negative fruit” that mark the presence and activity of the devil (Christ calls these evidences “tares” or weeds.)  The noun we studied which represented the tares was Treachery (Review Treachery Lesson here). We determined to stand on Bible Ground and objectively evaluate ourselves for the tares of treachery in our living – the sure sign the devil and his crowd are attempting to infiltrate.  We are under  attack to defeat our effectual living for Christ; in order to bring shame and dishonor to the Name of God. Our task is to look for evidences of their presence and climb up to Bible Ground against the evidence we find.

In this lesson we explore the photo-negative of the Holy Fruit of Joy.  What “negative fruit” do we bear (or what tares can we find) indicating we neglect Truth about the our position in the Joy of the Lord.

Key Bible Verse

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law…
Galatians 5:22-23

One word that comes quickly to my mind as being the opposite of Joy is Sorrow.  Sorrow is a natural and (too) often occurring sensation for us.  Bible Ground in the area of sorrow holds rich insights (which we will explore directly).  But the point to be delivered is the devil rarely permits us to sit amid productive insights – but mares and perverts Godly lessons in attempts to drive the Believer away from their profits.  In the case of sorrow, the goal of the enemy is take us out of God-ordained sorrow and drive us into misery. Misery then, is the target of this study.

The approach will be to examine six Bible-truths about sorrow and then to offer guidelines to self-assess if our thoughts or actions regarding personal struggle and sorrow progress beyond and violate the Godly principles found in the six, characteristics or principles.

Take Aways

Here are the six, taken directly from the Word of God, each are developed more fully in the video…

  • The presence of sorrow is guaranteed
  • The purpose for sorrow is testing
  • The response to sorrow is rejoicing
  • The objective of sorrow is faith
  • The focus of sorrow is endurance
  • The outcome of sorrow is perfection

The next step in our study was to look for evidence of corrosive attitudes or actions manifested during our trials and sorrows which reflect a “contrary-truth” (or evidence of tares.)  These then are the exact places where the enemy is active in attempting to steal our Joy.  Let’s summarize those findings.  For each of the six truths about sorrow, we unearthed two evidences indicating we misunderstood our suffering and thence were driven to misery, doubt and despondency – behaviors sure to rob us of our Joy.

The presence of sorrow is guaranteed

  • Evidence of living contrary to that truth
    • Being surprised at your adversities
    • Feeling you are being singled out

The purpose for sorrow is testing

  • Evidence of living contrary to that truth
    • Seeing your trials as arbitrary
    • Concentrating on causes and not purposes

The response to sorrow is rejoicing

  • Evidence of living contrary to that truth
    • Feeling picked on and punished
    • Languishing in complaint

The objective of sorrow is faith

  • Evidence of living contrary to that truth
    • Feeling isolated and alone
    • Ignoring spiritual needs

The focus of sorrow is endurance

  • Evidence of living contrary to that truth
    • Taking the short view
    • Impatient with God

The outcome of sorrow is perfection

  • Evidence of living contrary to that truth
    • Seeing no way out
    • Nursing feelings of doom

The Battle Plan at Restart Church is to first educate and then encourage personal self-assessment to look for evidence of the tares  Where there is Misery there are demons.  You find the tares elaborated above and you find demons attacking the Fruit of God’s Joy in you.  Once again, I implore you to roll up your sleeves.  Check out out the video to see how I expand these points.  Lord bless and keep you as you understand the places the enemy seeks to destabilize and mock your way along the Jesus Path.

There is every reason for you to study this Series as if your life depended on it.
