Battleground: Three Evil Attacks

Battleground: Three Evil Attacks

The Nature of Demonic Attack

The Bible is not silent when it comes to clarifying the vulnerabilities each of us possess.  The verse below launches our discussion by identifying three avenues along which the devil and his crowd attack the Jesus Follower… check it out!

Key Bible Verse

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world…
1 John 2:16

John does a huge favor by delineating these three categories for us. Each of them are sort of built-in; intrinsic to the human experience and if neglected, provide entry points for the devil and his gang to gain advantage of us.  The Bible teaches that humans are a tri-fold creation: body, soul (emotions, mind and will) and spirit – see 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

It is no coincidence we are subject to demonic temptation within each of these three domains (body, soul and spirit) and (importantly) each of these domains line up directly with the three attack routes identified in the Key Verse Above (lust of the flesh, lust of the eye, and the boastful pride of life.)   Permit me to outline my meaning.

  • Lust of the flesh
    • Body
    • Physical needs
  • Lust of the eyes
    • Soul (emotions, mind, and will)
    • Feelings, reasoning and intentions
  • Boastful pride of life
    • Spirit
    • Attainment, admiration

Take Aways

The devil will attack the these three areas aggressively as he did with both Eve in the garden and with Jesus in the wilderness…

EVE – read the background verse: Genesis 3:6

  • Good for food
    • Lust of the flesh
    • Temptation of the body
  • Pleasing to the eye
    • Lust of eye
    • Temptation of the soul (emotions, mind, and will)
  • Good to make one wise
    • Boastful pride of life
    • Temptation of the spirit

JESUS – read the background verses: Luke 4:1-13

  • Stones to bread
    • Lust of the flesh
    • Temptation of the body
  • Wealth and glory of the worlds’ kingdoms
    • Lust of eye
    • Temptation of the soul (emotions, mind, and will)
  • Cast yourself down (and be seen by others emerging unhurt)
    • Boastful pride of life
    • Temptation of the spirit

So how do we resist these tri-fold evil attacks?  When confronted with temptation we are out of habit (and lack of spiritual muscle) most likely to respond incorrectly.   We are more apt to first process things through our soul (NOT GOOD)…

Temptation is processed through the Soul

  • Emotional reaction to the temptation
    • We lose objectivity, we color the facts
    • Emotions don’t sit long alone…
  •  Emotions inform the Mind
    • We think subjectively
    • We confuse raw thinking with understanding and wisdom
  • Thinking triggers the Will
    • The sequence is not long…
    • We decide what to do
  • The body rouses
    • Glandular secretions and hormones fire us up
    • We engage ineffectively against the temptation
  • What is the missing element here?
    • The Spirit is not consulted, the Spirit is quenched

The following sequence will meet the temptation on Bible Ground, because here the temptation is processed through the Spirit

  • Spirit commands the Will
    • Submission to the ways of God
    • Intentionality to serve and follow the Jesus Path (see James 4:7)
  • The Will sets the Mind
  • Now the Mind is in position to govern the Emotions (see Philippians 4:8)
    • Focusing on the noble things negates emotional reactions
  • Spirit and Soul can now focus the body for action
    • The objective of all action is service (see Mark 10:45)
    • The Believer fulfills their ultimate purpose in service for others
    • The devil and his crowd hate when temptation is turned to service

The only way to consistently resist and counter-attack temptations is to make a stronger routine of studying the Word, of praying (deeply and thoughtfully) and not neglecting gathering together with other Believers to be reinforced in your walk along the Jesus path…

Once again I ask you to remember we are engaged in spiritual warfare with malignant spiritual forces.  They have thousands of years of human experience to draw from in order to catch and debilitate you with just the “right” approach, the “right” attack.  However, when we spend time in the Word we fortify the Spirit, becoming more trusting of His promptings.  We learn to deny ourselves, to listen to Him and thus to best prepare ourselves to deflect and defeat the three evil attack avenues the enemy uses!
