The 7 Deadly Sins – Lust

The 7 Deadly Sins – Lust

I know what Lust is – or Do I?

We perhaps see Lust more as a noun: as in libedo; and lechery.   And though this indeed can become a stumbling block – the instruction here  emphasizes lust as a verb: as in desiring and craving.  And as such,  Lust is at the heart of all the 6 previous sins.

We Must Begin with Human Composition

The human critter is made up of three distinct parts:

  • Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ – 1 Thessalonians 5:23

And although you will run across the word “soul” often used to mean the “spirit” – they are not alike.  The spirit is the eternal, the thing breathed upon humans by God to give life.   Once the spirit becomes regenerated through belief in Jesus Christ for the remission of sin, the Perfect Spirit of God takes up residence within the Believer.

The soul is not so; if it were perfect David speaks to no end praying for his soul to be restored:

  • The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;  – Psalm 19:7

The soul is residence of the Will, the Mind and the Emotions.   The body is mortal flesh – and is yet to take on immortality.  The following diagram displays these relationships:

  • Spirit
  • Soul
    • Will
    • Mind
    • Emotion
  • Body

Only the Spirit is regenerated.  The Spirit informs our soul that we are acting unrighteously; but sometimes there seems nothing we can do about it; we feel trapped and unable to do what we know we should.  As Paul writes:

  • For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.   If I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me – Romans 7:19-20

I do want I don’t want to do – something has taken control of the steering wheel.  I am not free from this thing “dwelling in me” (i.e. Lust):

  • Making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members – Romans 7:23

Notice again – “in my members” – in me – something that dwells in me,  something rotten that must be tamed.

Me and My Lust

Make no mistake.  The Lust is all yours.  It dwells in you (in your soul) and is the active agent for sin.  Note how James instructs:

  • But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.   Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death – James 1:14-15

Your own lust, that dwells in you, is the doorway to your sin – to any of the 6 other Deadly Sins.  That why Lust is the deadliest of all the 7 Deadly Sins – because it is the engine that activates all of them.   Lust can erupt from any of the threefold composition of the Soul – the Will, the Mind or the Body.   I have set the soul (Will, the Mind and the Emotion) against the 6 sins.  You can see how Lust targets the soul

  • Pride – Attack on your Mind
  • Envy –  Attack on your Mind
  • Wrath –  Attack on your Emotion
  • Sloth – Attack on your Will
  • Greed – Attack on your Will
  • Gluttony – Attack on your Will

Okay if my Soul is the target – such that I demonstrate those 6 Deadly Sins – what is Lust really – how does it work?

The Threefold Nature of Lust

Brother John instructs that Lust comes in three forms:

  • For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world – 1 John 2:16

There they are then: lust of the eye, lust of the flesh and the boastful pride of life.   A precious guideline is that Scripture by Scripture is interpreted.  Let’s see these threefold forms of lust at work.

In the Garden of Eden – Lust assaults Eve

  • Lust of the flesh
    • Eve saw the fruit was “good for food”
  • Lust of the eye
    • That it was a “Delight to the eyes”
  • Boastful Pride of Life
    • And that it was “Desirable to make one wise”

In the Wilderness – Lust assaults the Lord Jesus

  • Lust of the flesh
    • “Turn these stones into bread”
  • Lust of the eye
    • “Showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory”
  • The Boastful Pride of Life
    • “Cast Yourself down” – be noticed and admired by the crowd

Lust Lures into the 7 Deadly Sins

Notice below the form Lust takes to engage and empower the 7 Deadly Sins

  • Pride
    • Boastful Pride of Life
  • Envy
    • Lust of the Eye
  • Wrath
    • Boastful Pride of Life
  • Sloth
    • Lust of the Flesh
  • Greed
    • Boastful Pride of Life
  • Gluttony
    • Lust of the Flesh
  • Lust
    • Lust of the Flesh

How Believers Defeat Lust

Permit me to suggest four (4) tools to help us deflate and defeat Lust in our daily living:

  • We already possess the power we need
  • We must command our Will
  • We must live moment by moment
  • We must remember we are not our own

We already possess the power we need

  • You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world – 1 John 4:4

Let’s begin with that stunning first phrase “You are from God.”  We are not some squishy pile of articulating protoplasm.  We are sources and are part of the Most High God, the Holy One, the Righteous King.  Note too the verb tense – “have overcome”  you already possess the Victory.  You have the power to claim it.

  • If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness – Romans 8:10
  • He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him – 2 Corinthians 5:21
  • But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you – Romans 8:11

We have the power – the One who created the universe lives inside you.  Paul cries Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you!  The next critical point in defeating lust is:

We must command our Will

It’s time we took control of ourselves.  We must understand our soul is comprised of our Will our Mind and our Emotions.  We must intentionally gain control of our Will to control the focus and intents of our Mind (the Emotions will follow).  The mind is variable – it wanders without you noticing.  At one time it is set on the flesh and death, at another time on the Spirit and life and peace   But note the word “set” – how do we set our minds?  With our will !!

  • Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind – Romans 12:2
  • For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace – Romans 8:6
  • Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth – Colossians 3:2

Set your mind – take command of your will, take charge of your attentions, take charge of your affections.   We must command our willpower and make it subject to the Spirit.  Next Point:

We Must Live Moment by Moment

How much time do you spend thinking about things that are not in the instant you are in?  Knock that off.   We have to focus!  And focus is an ongoing, continuous action.

  • Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me –John 15:4
  • Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son –  2 John 1:9

If You don’t abide – then you “don’t have God” you walk out from under the protection of God.  If You don’t remain, don’t persist, don’t command your will – then you will not have God to govern and protect you.   But see how that passage above continues!  What do you think happens to your life when you “have both the Father and the Son”  What happens to lust?  BOOM!   Why do you think the enemy works so hard at keeping your from personal times of Bible study and prayer.  Have any of you ever thought – I’d read the Bible but i don’t know where to start – or how do I read it.   Where do you think that voice is coming from?

But thankfully, the devil and his crowd are not the only sources of ideas for you and I:

  • But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you – John 14:26

Sit with your Bibles.  The Holy Spirit will instruct you – He will help you to remain, He will help you to abide.  But let’s not be ignorant of the Truth.  Do you have any ideas that our enemy takes a rest?  That he’s just a 9to5 threat?  Get serious!  We must be alert, like it or not – there is an active and malignant enemy who’s going to try to hose you down.

  • Be serious!  Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour – 1 Peter 5:8

Last point:

We must remember we are not our own

Somehow we get this idea that we can do whatever we want.  Of course we literally can, but not when you consider that we are under the control and ownership of the Holy Spirit.   This is the central question regarding the presence and power of lust in your life.  Who is in charge of you – do you think you are in charge of yourself?

  • Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?  For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body  – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The entrance fee to the Jesus Path was purchased by the His own blood. You were bought and paid for – taken from out of slavery to sin and now becoming slaves to His righteousness.

  • But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness – Romans 6:17-18

We are not our own.  When you put that thought in the front of your mind.  When we command our will to bring that thought forward, we are able to balance the lust we are struggling with obedience to what He would have us do.

Lust is that thing to which our Will, our Mind and our Emotion resonates with; what we  tunes into while being tempted.  But we are Victorious in Jesus Christ.  Spend time in the Word.  Pray earnestly and often.  Gather together with those of like mind.  Share your giftedness to meet the need of others.  Lend your story of Jesus to others.  These are the fruits we need to bear as we fight and defeat Lust.
