When you think of “you” what comes to mind? The little voice inside? The compilations of aches, pains and life challenges your body endures? The headaches of formal studies, finding a suitable spouse, or of raising kids? In one sense, it seems a silly question, but those walking the Jesus path need be aware the Bible offers very specific detail and important instruction about the make-up of the human being.
We are a three-fold creation. We are comprised of Body, Soul and Spirit. The body is made up of the five senses. The Soul (not to be confused by the High Church usage of soul referring to the immortal, indestructible part of you) is the mind, will and emotions of the individual. Soul is appears as the word “heart” – the thing that brings intellect, intention and feeling to the body. The spirit is the eternal breath of God in the individual. The spirit is the word which represents what lives forever – either eternally in heaven or eternally in hell.
Key Bible Verse
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ…
1 Thessalonians 5:23
In this context then, the spirit is “You.” You are not a body with a spirit tucked in. YOU are a spirit inside a body – an “earth-suit” – the temporary thing that one day will turn to dust. Furthermore, YOU are not simply what you think, aim-for, or feel. You (the spirit) can drive the mind, will and emotions to accomplish great things. But there is a catch. The mind, will and emotion which belong to You (spirit) must be governed and actively controlled by You (spirit) or else leave our perceptions, judgements and viewpoints in the hands of the sensual impulses of our body and the predictably selfish intentions of our mind, will, and emotions.
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another…
It becomes necessary then, for the Believer to receive instruction regarding how to apply the necessary disciplines and techniques to control the body and soul through the application of spiritual work – through You, the spirit.
We must learn to Nurture the Spirit to create boundaries for our body, our intellect, our willfulness and our emotions. This is done through
- Rebuilding relationship with God and
- Living alert to spiritual warfare
